HISTORY
For years, Doug Miller, owner of Club Mallard in Albany and Thalassa Bar & Billiards in Berkeley, dreamed of opening a tiki bar in his own back yard. When he found out Kings X was for sale, he thought the cozy corner bar located next to the final resting place of Victor Bergeron, the man thought to have invented the Mai Tai, was a tiki-god send.
In December of 2005, Doug’s dream was realized with the help of world renowned master of tiki and Island Décor, Bamboo Ben of Huntington Beach, California. Entirely outfitted in bamboo and tapa from Oceanic Arts and hand-carved tikis by Crazy Al of Bone Productions, the Kona Club is a little slice of paradise in Oakland’s Piedmont District.
